BMW E92 335d Endurance Racer, 300+ bhp / 600 Nm, FIA-spec

A diesel on the circuit might sound like an unconventional choice. Until the lights go green, the turbos build pressure and roughly 600 Nm of torque launches the BMW out of the corner. That is the moment it becomes instantly clear why the BMW 335d makes a remarkably effective starting point for endurance racing.

This BMW E92 335d Endurance Race Car is not a converted road car still at the beginning of its development. It is a fully built, thoroughly developed and proven race car that ran an entire championship as recently as late 2023, taking several podium results along the way.

With more than 300 bhp, around 600 Nm, a limited-slip differential, adjustable ABS, adjustable brake balance, a welded FIA roll cage and a far-reaching lightweight bodywork concept, this is a serious endurance racer. A car developed with one clear purpose: to go fast, to go the distance and, above all, to keep going reliably.

The history of BMW, the E92 and the 335d

BMW and motorsport have been inseparable for decades. From the legendary 2002 and the first 3 Series to the successes of the E30 M3, E36, E46 and later generations, the compact sports saloons from Munich have always formed an excellent basis for competition use.

The fifth generation of the BMW 3 Series, internally designated E92, arrived in 2005. The car combined a remarkably stiff body with rear-wheel drive, a balanced chassis and a distinctly BMW focus on the driver. Qualities that made the E92 not only an excellent road car, but also a highly interesting basis for motorsport.

Within that model range, the BMW 335d held a special position. Its six-cylinder twin-turbo diesel proved that diesel performance had long since stopped being solely about frugality. The immense torque made the 335d exceptionally quick during intermediate sprints and gave the car exactly the quality that is so valuable on the circuit too: strong acceleration without the constant need for extremely high revs.

In this race car, that concept has been sharpened further. With more than 300 bhp and around 600 Nm of torque, the BMW offers performance that impresses above all when accelerating out of corners. Where a naturally aspirated petrol engine first has to build revs, here an enormous amount of pull is available almost instantly.

And during endurance racing, that is precisely what counts. Not a single perfect lap, but lap after lap of speed, predictability and reliability.

A proven BMW 335d Endurance Race Car

The car was last campaigned across a full championship at the end of 2023, reaching the podium on several occasions. This makes it not a theoretical race project, but a car genuinely developed and proven in competition.

During use, preventive maintenance was central. After every race, for instance, the engine oil was replaced, precisely to safeguard mechanical reliability as far as possible under sustained load.

The 335d concept proves particularly interesting here. The strong BMW driveline concept, the immense torque and the relatively manageable maintenance and running costs make the car superbly suited to long-distance racing.

The result is a racer that can not only set fast lap times, but can also complete longer stints consistently.

More than 300 bhp and around 600 Nm of torque

The character of this BMW is shaped in large part by its driveline.

In this configuration, the six-cylinder 335d delivers more than 300 bhp and around 600 Nm of torque. It is that last figure in particular that makes an enormous difference on the circuit.

Coming out of a corner, there is no need to wait endlessly for the ideal rev range. The moment the power is called upon, the BMW pushes forward immediately. It makes overtaking and accelerating exceptionally effective and gives the car a character quite different from many conventional naturally aspirated race cars.

The engine is mated to a manual six-speed gearbox fitted with a short shifter. In addition, the car has an LSD limited-slip differential, allowing the available power to be put down onto the tarmac as effectively as possible.

It is a combination that offers both speed and involvement. This is still real driving.

Brakes and adjustable ABS

At least as impressive as the acceleration is the way this BMW sheds speed again.

The car features adjustable brake balance and adjustable ABS. With different ABS settings, the degree of intervention can be tailored to the conditions, the tyres and the driver's preference.

During endurance racing in particular, that is a significant advantage. As a stint progresses, tyres change and conditions shift, the driver can keep fine-tuning the car.

The system also inspires a great deal of confidence. Even in braking zones from over 200 km/h, you can attack hard. The car stays stable and predictable, and the ABS helps the driver brake right up against maximum braking capacity time after time.

That means less energy wasted on taming a nervous car and more attention on what endurance racing is ultimately about: consistent lap times.

The brakes themselves are fresh too. The brake discs have covered just a single trackday and the pads are new.

Lightweight bodywork and M3 look

A great deal of attention was paid to saving weight during the car's development.

The BMW has a complete M3-style bodywork kit, which not only gives the E92 a considerably more aggressive appearance, but also makes visually clear at a glance exactly what it was built for.

Various original body panels have been replaced with lightweight components. Among other things, the car has lightweight composite doors, a lightweight bonnet and a lightweight bootlid.

At the rear sits an adjustable rear wing, allowing the aerodynamic balance to be further tuned to circuit and driving style.

The white bodywork, wide M3 styling, low ride height and functional race equipment give the BMW precisely the look that suits its performance. Not a show car with a roll cage, but a competition car in which almost every part serves a purpose.

FIA specification and race interior

Inside, everything not needed to go fast has been removed.

At the centre sits the welded FIA roll cage, which forms the basis of the safety structure. The car has two race seats, with the FIA homologation of the driver's seat expected to remain valid for around another two years. The same applies to the FIA race harnesses fitted.

In addition, the BMW has an on-board intercom/talk system, an important element for communication between driver and pit crew during longer races.

A digital race dashboard with integrated lap-time recording provides the driver with the necessary information without needless distraction. Connections for an air-jack system are also present. The system itself is currently not operational and will need to be recommissioned before use.

Everything about the interior breathes competition. Climb in, harness fastened, comms check, start the engine and head for the pit lane.

Built for endurance racing

The appeal of this BMW 335d Racer lies not only in its speed. After all, an endurance race car has to do more than set one fast qualifying lap. It has to be predictable, remain relatively easy to drive when concentration fades after a long stint and, above all, be mechanically reliable. That is exactly where the strength of this concept lies.

The immense torque means the car does not constantly have to be wrung out to the limit to make speed. The adjustable ABS provides confidence under braking. The limited-slip differential helps on corner exit. The manual six-speed and short shifter give the driver direct control. And throughout, the technical foundation remains recognisably BMW.

That makes this BMW E92 335d Endurance Racer interesting not only for experienced drivers, but also for teams looking for a competitive race car in which speed and manageable running costs come together.

Condition: developed, maintained and ready for the next race

With a race car, condition is judged differently than with a collector's car. Here it is not about untouched paint or an interior free of signs of use. A good race car is judged on its preparation, engineering, safety equipment and proven usability.

This BMW is a genuine used competition car and naturally carries the signs of use that come with circuit driving. At the same time, the car was carefully and preventively maintained throughout its active racing career. Replacing the engine oil after every event is a good example of that.

The brake discs have just a single trackday behind them and the pads are new. The tyres currently fitted are older and will need to be replaced depending on the intended use. The car comes with two sets of wheels.

So what is offered here is not a half-finished race project requiring months of development first. The essence of the car is already there: a fast, proven and completely built endurance racer.

Climb in. Start up. Out of the pit lane. Race.

For anyone looking for a conventional BMW E92, this is probably not the right car.

For anyone looking for a BMW 335d race car, endurance racer, trackday BMW, FIA-spec BMW E92 or competitive circuit car with more than 300 bhp and around 600 Nm, the story becomes considerably more interesting.

The combination of enormous pull, rear-wheel drive, limited-slip differential, adjustable ABS, a manual six-speed gearbox and a fully competition-focused chassis makes this a remarkably effective package. Add to that a genuine competition history with several podium finishes.

No trailer queen. No project still waiting to be finished. A race car.

We warmly invite interested parties to come and view this exceptional BMW E92 335d Endurance Race Car in detail at our showroom in Katwijk. Here we can show the car up close and explain the technical specifications and racing history further.
