AMG was once a company that set up shop in an old mill in Affalterbach, taking Mercedes models that were frankly already far too good straight from the factory. One glance, one bit of meddling, and suddenly there stood something that gave you shivers down your spine as a motorway cruiser. In the nineties they were officially absorbed by Mercedes, and from that moment the floodgates were well and truly open.
What follows is a string of cars that look relatively calm on the outside, but hide an unexpectedly mean streak under the bonnet. The reverse world of tuning: don't shout, just bite.
The E55 AMG from this generation (the W211, for the insiders) is perhaps the finest example of that. A tidy executive saloon in a dignified shade of grey, proper lines, nothing to make you suspect anything out of the ordinary is going on. Until you open the bonnet and find a 5.4-litre V8 with a mechanical supercharger. A supercharger, not a turbo, so the response is immediate, brutal and utterly without patience.
476 bhp in a car that, if you must, will happily ferry your mother-in-law to the garden centre. She won't notice a thing, until you take the right-hand pedal a touch more seriously and the entire front end of the car wants to fling itself towards the horizon.
I've always had a soft spot for cars like this. The Q-car, the wolf in sheep's clothing, call it whatever you like. You pull away from a traffic light at the Hoevelaken motorway interchange and the lad in his dressed-up hatchback with gold wheels only works out what's happened three seconds later. No spoilers, no theatre. Just a discreet AMG badge and the sound of a V8 clearing its throat. BWWOOAAARP. That's the entire performance, and that is precisely enough.
Right, back to the car in question. This E55 AMG is a 2003 example, delivered in the colour Cubanit, a metallic shade of grey that underlines exactly what this car is about: present without drawing attention. Inside you'll find leather upholstery and that familiar Mercedes solidity from an era when the buttons were still real buttons. It sits on the right wheels, 245/40 R18 at the front and 265/35 R18 at the rear, neatly wrapped in fresh Pirellis.
And then the best thing about this example: the story it tells. This car has a German past with a service history that has few equals. From 2004 right through to 2014, dutifully attended to by Mercedes dealers and specialist firms in Rottweil, Donaueschingen, Augsburg and Winnenden. Mobil 1 at every oil change, spark plugs replaced on time, fresh brake fluid, supercharger belt done, and even the level control on the front axle was at some point neatly converted back to standard specification by Autohaus Lorinser.
Invoices included, no guesswork. That's exactly what you want to see in a car with this kind of character: someone who understood what they had in their hands.
Because let's be honest, a supercharged V8 like this isn't a car you put on a meagre diet. It wants Mobil 1, fresh spark plugs and an owner who keeps an eye on it. This example has had all of that. And you feel it: the SBC brakes that bite the way Mercedes intended, an engine that pulls cleanly without a stumble, and a chassis that does exactly what it should. This is not a project. This is a car you climb into, turn the key, and simply go.
The W211 E55 has quietly become one of those cars that are climbing in appreciation. And rightly so. The successors got a biturbo V8, technically impressive, but a touch less raw, a touch less character. This supercharged version is the last of a certain breed. Mechanical, direct, and with a sound that a modern turbo never quite mimics. In a few years' time you'll be kicking yourself for not buying one now while you still could.
A gentleman in a tailored suit that sits suspiciously tight across the shoulders. That's how this E55 drives.
Do you dare let it fully off the leash on a straight?
